Launch of the first hydrogen bus made in Chile: testing to begin in 2025

The presentation was led by the President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric, who highlighted the public-private participation in the design, development, and manufacturing of the bus. Its autonomy is up to 600 kilometers, combining hydrogen charge and battery.

"This is an example of concrete results from the National Strategy for Sustainable Productive Development for Chile", these were the words of the President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric, referring to the first hydrogen bus made in Chile, which is the result of a public-private collaboration between Corfo, Colbún, Anglo American and Reborn Electric Motors.

"The bus we are presenting today is a tangible example of the path we must and can take as a country: more environmental protection and well-being for families, more productivity, efficiency, and added value for our economy. That is what we want for Chile", highlighted the Head of State.

He added that, "(...) We have an unprecedented window of opportunity, the energy transformation, not only for Chile but for the world".

FIRST HYDROGEN BUS MADE 100% IN CHILE

The first hydrogen bus made in Chile, had a total investment of over $800 million (chilean pesos). The aim of the project was to develop and validate through road tests a passenger transport bus based on hydrogen, to operate in the mining industry.

In the project, the Chile Foundation and the National Pilot Center for Mining also collaborated.

The bus will begin its trials in 2025 on various routes, before doing demonstrations in communities and educational institutions. Its autonomy is up to 600 kilometers, combining hydrogen charging and battery.

The project, led by Colbún, Anglo American and Reborn Electric Motors, was backed by Corfo through the Corfo Crea y Valida financing line, a program that co-finances the development of new or improved products or processes that require research and development.

"GROWTH HAND IN HAND WITH SUSTAINABLE ENERGY TRANSFORMATION"

At the event, the Minister of Mining, Aurora Williams; the Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, Juan Carlos Muñoz; the Minister of Energy, Diego Pardow; the Executive Vice President of Corfo, José Miguel Benavente; the CEO of Anglo American in Chile, Patricio Hidalgo; the CEO of Colbún, José Ignacio Escobar; and the Co-Founder and CTO of Reborn Electric Motors, Ricardo Repenning were present.

The leader highlighted that "public-private collaboration allows us to better capitalize on the great potentials of Chile. Our country can grow more than what forecasts estimate and can develop in an inclusive and sustainable way under the shelter of the energy transformation that the world needs. We are strategic allies on this path."

Meanwhile, Minister Juan Carlos Muñoz emphasized that "this bus represents how our country is facing the future with a vision committed to the environment. Over the past few years, in terms of mobility, Chile has become a benchmark for commitment to clean energy in this part of the planet. We have the largest fleet of electric buses outside of China and we dream that in the future we can add other sustainable fuels, like the one this bus uses".
