VTT will be one of the co-executors of the new Magallanes Green Hydrogen Technology Center in Chile

This Center will allow the adaptation of technological solutions and services to the particular conditions of the region in a joint work environment with companies, local training centers and universities, and collaboration links with international technological centers.

Corfo awards new Magallanes Green Hydrogen Technology Center, Corfo

Corfo announced the award of the Magallanes Green Hydrogen Technology Centre. This initiative seeks to provide infrastructure, technological capabilities, and human capital to promote the sustainable development of the green hydrogen industry and its value chain.

The selected project was presented by Fundación Chile and co-implemented by the Technical Research Centre of Finland LTD (VTT), HUB FPYME Magallanes, the University of Chile, Adolfo Ibáñez University and the Energy Sustainability Agency. In addition, it is associated with ENAP, HNH ENERGY, HIF, EDELMAG, Consorcio Austral, EDF and TEG CHILE.

GOALS AND PRIORITIES OF THE NEW H2V CENTER

Furthermore, it will have the mission to encourage and accelerate the adoption and development of products and services based on Research, Development and Innovation (R+D+I), through technology test banks, pilots, scaling up and the training of specialized human capital, to respond to the needs of the new industry.

The Magallanes Green Hydrogen Center will focus its action on challenges related to project development, with a focus on adapting to the specific conditions of the region; on enabling activities of the projects and future operation, especially in strengthening the regional value chain such as supplier development or human capital, and in addressing environmental and social challenges, focusing on climate change mitigation and adaptation, environmental monitoring, biodiversity protection, etc.

This initiative was one of the priorities raised by the regional Roadmap. Corfo

The initiative is part of the Sustainable Productive Development Program (DPS), led by the Ministry of Economy and funded by Corfo, and is also part of the so-called Magallanes Pact, a public-private agreement for the sustainable development of the green hydrogen industry in the Magallanes region, where the central government and the regional government of Magallanes and the Chilean Antarctica have established mutual commitments with H2V project developers in the region, with the purpose of promoting local job creation, connectivity with national companies, efficient use of infrastructure, and technological development. This last component precisely involves the creation and operation of the center, as well as a plan to encourage local demand to stimulate the consumption of H2V and its derivatives.

The Minister of Economy, Promotion and Tourism, Nicolás Grau, argued that making Magallanes a sustainable industrial hub for green hydrogen requires development on various fronts. We have made progress in capacity building, in promoting local suppliers, and in promoting shared infrastructure.

He added that, "To strengthen the ecosystem, today we announce the awarding of the H2V Technological Center for Magallanes, $6 billion to address industry challenges in the region. Through Corfo, the DPS Program will create this center aimed at solving industry challenges, the training of specialized professionals, and the promotion of local applications that allow the use of H2V and derivatives."

"Corfo has long committed significant resources to various tools for the development of the green hydrogen industry and its derivatives, such as the implementation of production and demand projects, manufacturing and/or assembling of electrolyzers in Chile or manufacturing in enabling sectors for this industry, development of innovative technologies, and creation of human capacities. These incentives go directly to the private sector so that it can get involved in the creation of local value chains in this industry," explained Hugo Arias, Manager of Strategic Affairs for Corfo.

For his part, Fernando Hentzschel, Manager of Technological Capabilities at Corfo, added that "We hope that by establishing this type of capacity in the Magallanes region, this new Center will be able to attract more local and national actors to the development of activities, setting a standard on how to integrate the various actors of an industry around the responsible incorporation of the industry in the region and its gradual growth, addressing environmental and social challenges along with sustainable practices that benefit the communities".

Meanwhile, Hernán Araneda, General Manager of Fundación Chile, valued the awarding of the Center, aligned with the institution's mission to contribute to Chile's sustainable development with high-impact technological innovations, together with companies, technological partners, and with the support of the public sector.

He added that "The Center represents an extraordinary opportunity as it has the strong support from pioneer companies in the development of green hydrogen in Chile, as well as partners from Finland, a leading country in sustainable development. The Regional Government of Magallanes and Corfo Regional have a clear roadmap, and it is an honor for us to accompany the region, its institutions, and its population in this pioneering effort."
