Latnord 2026: Conference will address the challenge of decarbonizing mining with Nordic countries

The third edition of the Latnord conference “The Nordic Countries and Latin America: Sustainable Mining” will be held on November 23 and 24 in Santiago and will bring together representatives from Codelco, Antofagasta Minerals, Collahuasi, Anglo American, VTT of Finland, and the Luleå University of Technology, among others.

October 2026.- Chile will once again become a meeting point between the Latin American mining ecosystem and the Nordic countries. The third edition of the international conference The Nordic Countries and Latin America: Sustainable Mining, organized by the Finnish-Chilean consulting firm Latnord, will be held in Santiago on the 23rd and 24th of November. This year, Codelco will be the Miner Partner.

The meeting will focus on one of the main challenges currently facing the industry: how to advance in the decarbonization of mining operations using technologies that are beginning to be implemented or tested in both Latin America and the Nordic countries.

Among the topics that will be part of the agenda are the electrification of open-pit and underground mines, green hydrogen, IPCC systems (In-Pit Crushing and Conveying), HVO and synthetic fuels, along with other solutions aimed at reducing industry emissions.

The 2026 edition will feature representatives from mining companies, technological centers, universities, suppliers, and international organizations.

Among the confirmed exhibitors are Loreto Maturana, Manager of Decarbonization at Antofagasta Minerals; Verónica Cortés, Energy Manager at Collahuasi; Joaquín Bernier, Superintendent of El Teniente Mine at Codelco; Gonzalo Ramírez, Director of Innovation for Decarbonization of Processes at Codelco; and Pablo Contreras, Climate Action Manager of the state mining company.

From Anglo American, Juan Pablo Schaeffer, Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability, and Rafael Ascanio, Climate Change Manager for Chile, will participate. They are joined by Alfredo Boggi, LATAM Director of Asset Management at AngloGold Ashanti.

The Nordic and technological perspective will be represented, among others, by Jussi Manninen, Vice President of Carbon Neutral Solutions at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland; Andro Lindsay, Business Development Manager of VTT; Joel Andersson, professor at the Luleå University of Technology, Sweden; Carolina Ahlstrand, BDM International Markets at Aurora Tech Finland; and Rodolfo Ramos, Product Line Director Sprayed Concrete Mining at the Finnish company Normet.

Viviana Huerta, Manager of Decarbonisation at the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), and Louise de Brass, ambassador of Denmark in Chile, will also participate.

In this way, the conference aims to create a space where experiences developed in countries such as Finland, Sweden, and Denmark can directly engage with the challenges of one of the main industries of Chile and Latin America.

From Conversations to Tasks

Programming will not end in Santiago. After the two conference days, participants will have the opportunity to get to know Codelco's operations directly.

According to the schedule, a visit to Codelco's Andina Division is planned for November 25th, while a visit to El Teniente will take place on November 26th.

The conference will take place at the Andronico Luksic Abaroa Complex of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, at the San Joaquin Campus, a venue that boasts over 3,500 square meters of facilities and an auditorium that can accommodate more than 800 people.

This will be the third edition of the meeting driven by Latnord. The first one took place in Santiago in 2024 and was focused on the decarbonization of mining in Chile, Sweden and Finland. In 2025, the conference moved to Luleå, Sweden, where visits were also made to facilities such as the Aitik mine and the HYBRIT project, linked to the use of green hydrogen to move towards fossil fuel-free steel production.

With its return to Chile in 2026, the meeting aims to deepen this bridge between both ecosystems and generate new collaboration opportunities among miners, technology developers, equipment manufacturers, research centers, universities, and the public sector in Latin America and the Nordic countries.

More information about the conference and participation is available on the official Latnord site.
