Patagonia Biotechnology: takes its algae-based technology to new international markets
The Biotech, with the support of ProChile, already has a presence with its products in Peru, Ecuador, the USA, and Italy. Now they have added Mexico and are on the brink of opening Guatemala.
Patagonia Biotechnology, or simply PatBio, is a company born in Los Ríos and with operations also in the Los Lagos Region, that boasts 25 years of experience in research, development and innovation related to algae. According to its CEO and co-founder, Rebeca Gálvez, "it has been a long process, driven by the certainty that it is possible to create bio-inputs for the agricultural industry with a sustainable outlook and respect for the environment".
Today, with their brand Fertum , they have managed to position themselves in the national market, but also with the support of ProChile, they are already present in Peru, Ecuador, and the United States. It is in this context that one of their main challenges is to consolidate their position in the North American market, in addition to strengthening their presence in Mexico, a country where they recently sent their first container and by the end of this year they hope to send their first container to Guatemala.
This sustainable innovation, coupled with the good results that Fertum offers to agricultural crops, has allowed the company to enter various demanding international markets.

"What we do is extract the power of Patagonian algae to develop products that enhance the resilience of crops to extreme conditions such as drought, excess water, high and low temperatures, and so on. The idea was always to extract these active components from the algae, which are highly resilient, but the challenge was to do it without damaging the marine ecosystems. Today, with great pride, we achieved it," explains Rebeca Gálvez.
The regional director of ProChile Los Ríos, Bárbara Sepúlveda, indicates that: "This product highlights the diversity of the export offer from Los Ríos, as well as the solid human capital in research, development, and innovation that the region has. At the same time, it demonstrates the great potential of the marine resources of our coasts, especially when they are managed adequately and consciously, with minimal impact on the fragile marine ecosystems".
And he adds that, "PatBio is an excellent example of what can be achieved when solutions for the productive sector are developed with a collaborative, multidisciplinary and environmentally responsible approach. Undoubtedly, something that today, more than ever, is valued in many international markets."
