Green Hydrogen Summit: Concepción to host international Renewable Hydrogen event
In the sixth version of the Green Hydrogen Summit, representatives from Germany, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Canada, Japan, and the United States will participate, among other countries that promote the development of green hydrogen.
For the first time outside the Metropolitan Region, the city of Concepción is preparing to host the sixth edition of the Green Hydrogen Summit Chile LAC 2025, the main open-access renewable hydrogen meeting in Latin America. The event will take place on April 22 and 23, 2025, at the SurActivo Events Center, with the participation of experts, companies, investors, and authorities from different countries to discuss the future of green hydrogen in the region.
This event is organized by the Production Development Corporation (Corfo), the Ministry of Energy of Chile, the Delegation of the European Union in Chile and the German agency GIZ, with the support of the Delegation of the European Union in Chile and various national and international entities. In this edition, representatives from Germany, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Canada, Japan, and the United States, among other countries promoting the development of green hydrogen, will participate.
The Minister of Economy, Promotion, and Tourism, Nicolás Grau, highlighted that Chile is in a privileged position to lead the global transition towards green hydrogen, particularly to promote public-private platforms that strengthen regulation and the implementation of projects. "By 2025, this forum will be held in this region as a sign of support for projects such as the production of efuels, the installation of electrolyzer factories that are supported by the government and testify to a local value chain that benefits companies and entrepreneurs in the area, boosting the Biobío region as a future player in the green hydrogen industrial development pole".
Grau explained that this is part of our Industrial Strengthening Plan for Biobío, an unprecedented initiative that facilitates dialogue between trade unions, entrepreneurs, regional government, central government and universities, and which consists of 32 measures. Some of these aim to help our Biobío industry transition towards green technologies, thereby maintaining its job generation while reducing its carbon footprint.
For the Minister of Energy, Diego Pardow, the green hydrogen industry offers a series of opportunities for the regions of our country, enabling the reconciliation of economic development, job creation and environmental care.
He added that, in particular, the Biobío Region has tremendous industrial and logistical potential that will accelerate the use of this energy source. He values the organization of these types of events that allow interaction between different social actors such as the private sector, the public sector, academia, and communities.
Meanwhile, the Executive Vice President of Corfo, José Miguel Benavente, noted that this new hydrogen industry entails complex technological challenges and high investments that will necessarily require a framework of national and international cooperation. This is a marathon in which we, as a country, are pioneers in the world, and the contribution of each actor in this long value chain is required.
He added that holding the event in the Biobío Region reinforces the importance of regions and local demand in this transformation, highlighting its industrial and logistical potential. Corfo is supporting a series of initiatives in technological programs and in the Biobío Industrial Strengthening Plan which include financing measures for green hydrogen projects and their supply chain. In this way, an industrial development model focused on the territory is consolidated.
EU Commitment
Claudia Gintersdorfer, European Union Ambassador to Chile, stated that "the EU is committed to establishing a favorable environment for the renewable hydrogen market, both within and beyond the partnership. In Chile, we work closely with the Government, public agencies, and the private sector through a Team Europe Initiative. We have committed up to 220.5 million euros for the development of renewable hydrogen in the country."
He added that, "For this, we collaborate with the EU member states, the European Investment Bank and our implementing partners: KfW, GIZ and AECID. Together, we are not only decarbonizing the Chilean economy, but also creating green jobs and valuable business opportunities for Chilean and European companies."
Meanwhile, George Cristodorescu, Director of the Energy Cluster at GIZ, noted that "we celebrate the Green Hydrogen Summit Chile LAC 2025 coming to Concepción for the first time, a key region for the development of green hydrogen in Chile. This edition not only reaffirms Latin America's commitment to the energy transition, but also highlights the potential for collaboration between countries and sectors to advance towards a low-carbon economy".
The Summit will offer a wide agenda of panels and activities, addressing topics such as financing, infrastructure, certification, local manufacturing, inclusion in the industry, and investment opportunities in the Biobío region.
Attendees will be able to participate in matchmaking and networking sessions, as well as a series of parallel events that will complement the main program. Among them, one stands out about the H2Global instrument, the discussion on critical materials and technologies for local manufacturing, and the analysis on the relationship of hydrogen with nearby communities.
