Antarctic Fiber Project: Finland shares innovation for extreme connectivity
This submarine cable will allow the white continent to be digitally connected with Puerto Williams, reinforcing Chile's strategic role as a gateway to Antarctica and positioning the Magallanes region as a hub for scientific and technological development.
On the upcoming June 19, 2025, Punta Arenas will be the setting for the Seminar "Antarctic Cable: Connecting the Last Frontier", an event that will bring together authorities, technology companies, and representatives from the scientific ecosystem to discuss one of the most ambitious connectivity projects in the southern hemisphere: the Austral Fiber Optic Project.
This submarine cable will allow the white continent to be digitally connected with Puerto Williams, reinforcing Chile's strategic role as the gateway to Antarctica and positioning the Magallanes region as a hub for scientific and technological development.
The event will take place on June 19, 2025, from 08:30 am at the CADI UMAG Auditorium (Punta Arenas) and can also be followed live by streaming.
Finland shares its expertise in the far south of the world
In this context, Finland will contribute through the participation of technology companies—which have been present in Chile for two decades—which will share their expertise in connectivity, critical infrastructure, and extreme environmental monitoring.
Nokia: a global benchmark in telecommunications infrastructure, will address the relevance of the landing point in Magallanes and the technical challenges of ensuring secure and robust connectivity in extreme conditions.
Vaisala: a global leader in weather and environmental solutions, will present the necessary technologies to anticipate and mitigate climatic phenomena that could affect the deployment and operation of the cable.

Polar Science, International Cooperation and Sustainable Connectivity
The presence of Finland reinforces its commitment to sustainable development, scientific innovation, and international technological cooperation in strategic territories such as Antarctica. This collaborative effort involves entities such as Team Finland Latin America, SUBTEL Chile, CAF, University of Magallanes, Vaisala and Nokia.
The project not only aims to improve connectivity in one of the most isolated environments on the planet, but also to boost polar science, facilitate climate monitoring, and lay the groundwork for a new digital infrastructure at the end of the world.
