Storytelling in first-person: The Thousand Tales' bold vision for a borderless Turku
In an era dominated by streaming services and social media feeds, rediscovering the enchantment of face-to-face storytelling can be a challenge.
That’s precisely where The Thousand Tales steps in—a welcoming community devoted to creating a safe, inclusive space for anyone yearning to share a story, whether it’s carefully crafted in advance or spoken straight from the heart.
Last Wednesday, March 19th of 2025 -in a night inspired by the Spring equinox and the Persian Festival of Fire, which heralds the rejuvenation of nature- this collective hosted a storytelling session at Kahvila Koroinen in Turku, Finland, drawing curious locals and newcomers alike into a realm where real-life testimonies and fanciful folklore share equal spotlight.
The gathering congregated almost 30 persons and opened its activities around a modest outdoor blaze, where attendees huddled to learn about the Festival of Fire’s significance. Simultaneously, it was an opportunity to welcome the Finnish spring. Some storytellers opted for personal narratives exploring the trials of adjusting to a new country; others went the inventive route, blending seasonal lore with futuristic twists.

From the attendees, nine storytellers stepped up. They had the opportunity —mainly in English, which is the language the community operates in— to share some personal experiences, as well as to invite the audience on a creative journey. The result was a mixture of voices that highlighted not just cultural diversity, but also the transformative power of shared human experience.
The community is open to everyone — from students and migrants to locals and curious visitors. What matters most is the desire to be present and to participate in an intimate, safe, and welcoming environment that fosters inclusion. This is the recurring goal they hope to achieve month after month, as the next gathering is expected to take place in April (in Turku)
It’s important to mention that these gatherings are free of charge, with complimentary drinks such as coffee, tea, and soup available. Voluntary donations are always welcome and appreciated. For upcoming events, all information will be shared through the community’s official Instagram account, @the1000tales_storytelling.
