Project that promotes the universal charger adds support from Sernac
The director of the agency also suggested that the standard include aspects such as companies reporting the durability of these connectors.
It is one of the most harmful consequences of technology: all the garbage it generates that is polluting the planet. One of the elements that collaborates in them with the chargers of the different devices and that, on the whim of some brands, force users to fill up with this type of element. Europe has already legislated on the matter and Chile also has a bill in the pipeline.
Regarding the latter, the national director of Sernac, Andrés Herrera, praised before the Senate Economy Commission this initiative that establishes the use of a standardized universal charger for different types of technological devices, which includes cell phones.
The authority attended the meeting to present the institutional vision of the implications that this initiative may have from the field of protection of consumer rights.
During his speech, Herrera valued this initiative, because in his opinion it implies a series of benefits for consumers. strengthening the right to free choice of goods and services and caring for the environment, in addition to suggesting that the standardization of other types of charging, such as wireless charging via NFC or other forms, must also be addressed in the future.
“This project is in line with international regulations in this area, and implies a simplification in the use of electronic equipment and devices, contributing to reducing technological waste and reducing unnecessary costs,” Herrera stressed, in addition to raising the possibility that suppliers They can sell these products with or without chargers or power outlet adapters, although establishing the prohibition of tied sale.
In addition, the authority commented that it is important to make explicit in this bill some provisions, such as, for example, that accessories (charging devices) are durable goods, which will imply that companies must report their durability, as mandated by the Pro Consumer Law.
What the initiative says
Let’s remember that this bill establishes a series of aspects that will benefit consumers, such as the duty of suppliers to ensure common interoperability between these devices and their charging devices, in such a way that they all adapt to a single port of loading.
This bill also makes it mandatory for mobile information and telecommunications devices to comply with the procedures for the certification of safety and quality of electrical products established in the Regulation for the certification of electrical products and fuels.
In case of non-compliance with these provisions, if the project is approved, companies may receive fines of up to 300 UTM (around 19 million 500 thousand pesos) for each infraction.
