Green Destinations Certification: Camarones Marks New Milestone in Its Commitment to Sustainable Tourism
The commune is moving towards the international Green Destinations certification, through collaborative work with the Arica Siempre Activa Tourism Governance promoted by Corfo.
The commune of Camarones has marked another milestone in its commitment to sustainable tourism, by initiating the implementation process prior to the certification of Green Destinations Certified.
This is the continuation of the work begun in 2022, when the commune was recognized among the Top100 Stories, highlighting its dedication to environmental conservation and the enhancement of cultural heritage.
The effort of the commune of Camarones is not only framed in the protection of cultural heritage, as is the case of the Chinchorro Culture , but also responds to a comprehensive vision of sustainable tourism development promoted by the Arica Siempre Activa program, supported by Corfo. It establishes in its Roadmap the certification of Green Destinations, which plays a crucial role as an internationally recognized standard in the evaluation and promotion of sustainable tourism destinations.
CERTIFICATION “GREEN DESTINATIONS”
The Green Destinations certification process complements these efforts, providing an internationally recognized framework for assessing and certifying tourist destinations based on environmental, socio-cultural and economic sustainability criteria. Green Destinations’ certification programs offer something for all types of destinations, from municipalities and cities to regions and protected areas.

Meanwhile, destinations that participate in Green Destinations certification programs commit to a sustainability management cycle aimed at continuous improvement through periodic evaluations and independent verification.
These actions automatically install them in the Top 100 Stories Competition 2024, giving them the opportunity to gain global recognition for their leadership practices in sustainable tourism.
“We are excited to embark on this process towards Green Destinations certification. It is a recognition of our commune’s commitment to the preservation of our natural and cultural environment, as well as to the well-being of our community and the visitors who honor us with their presence,” said the mayor of Camarones, Cristian Zavala Soto.
While the regional director of Corfo, Luis Rocafull, stressed that “it is positive that one of our communes such as Camarones is a pioneer at the national level in working for sustainable tourism, one of the pillars of the work carried out by the Arica Siempre Activa Tourism Governance that seeks to transform our territory into a world-class destination”.
With the beginning of this process, the commune of Camarones demonstrates its firm commitment to sustainable tourism and its desire to be recognized as an exemplary destination in this field. This is one more step towards a future where tourism and conservation are harmoniously intertwined, providing benefits for both nature and the local community.
