Turku is a finalist in Bloomberg's International Innovation Challenge
Turku made it to the top 50 with its innovative idea to transform food aid into a dignified, community-based service system.
Turku has been selected as a finalist in the internationally renowned Bloomberg Mayors Challenge innovation competition. More than 630 cities from 33 countries participated, and Turku made it to the top 50 with its innovative idea to transform food aid into a dignified, community-based service system.
The Bloomberg Mayors Challenge seeks the world’s boldest and most impactful solutions for improving basic public services.
At the core of Turku’s proposal is a comprehensive reform of the city's food aid system, integrating digital tools, community meals, and a wide range of support services into a seamless experience.

A NEW SERVICE MODEL
This year's competition focuses on social inclusion, innovative service design, and the ability to solve challenging societal problems.
In this sense, in this new model, food aid is integrated with other everyday support services, making assistance more accessible and reducing the stigma often associated with receiving food aid.
"It’s wonderful that Turku’s proposal has sparked international interest. Our goal is to provide those in need with a dignified and inclusive experience—one that also helps reduce long-term reliance on food aid. This competition supports Turku’s vision of building a more equitable and sustainable city," says Turku’s Mayor, Piia Elo.
As a finalist, Turku will receive support to further develop and test its idea. The city will take part in an international Ideas Camp this July, where finalists and experts will refine the concepts together. In January 2026, Bloomberg Philanthropies will select 25 winning cities, each receiving $1 million USD to implement their ideas.
The Bloomberg Mayors Challenge highlights the crucial role of cities in improving residents’ well-being.
