Turku city throws a welcome party for 2025 newcomers: hockey, music & more
The City of Turku is giving new residents a very Finnish welcome: an evening of top-flight ice hockey, a tour of local sports clubs, and a live set by hometown pop star Robin Packalen on September 20

The program opens with TPS vs. KalPa at 5:00 p.m., with the game expected to wrap between 7:30 and 8:00 p.m. But it isn’t just about the scoreboard. Throughout the evening, local clubs will showcase the breadth of sports and recreational activities available in Turku—an easy way for newcomers to find a team, routine, or community in their new city.
After the final buzzer, the ice gives way to lights and lyrics as Robin Packalen takes the stage, billed as the night’s finale and a not-so-subtle hint that Turku wants its new neighbors to stick around for the encore.
"It’s important that both new residents and long-time Turku people truly experience Turku as their hometown". "We want to build a city where everyone can find their place and feel like they belong. These kinds of shared moments strengthen that sense of belonging—and hometown pride."
Turku mayor, Piia Elo
The festivities set the tone for Turku Day on Sunday, September 21, a citywide celebration heavy on music, dance, culture, and movement, organized by the City together with local associations, companies, and clubs. In other words: if Saturday’s about finding your people, Sunday’s the parade.
Tickets: New residents who moved to Turku in 2025 can register to receive a free ticket to the Welcome Night. Availability is limited to 1,000 tickets on a first-come basis.
