With the goal of strengthening international ties and learning from two global leaders in sustainable construction, a new Chilean delegation — made up of representatives from the public, private, and academic sectors — will visit Finland and Sweden from May 11 to 17, 2025. Participants will exchange experiences with experts in the field.

Organized by consultancy Nina Fu, the visit will take them to Turku and Helsinki, where they will seek to build collaborative networks and exchange technical knowledge with key players in the Nordic timber ecosystem, focusing on areas such as industrialized construction, architectural innovation, regulations, certification processes, and circular economy.

The journey also aims to inspire new initiatives in Latin America by showcasing the potential of timber as a core material for present and future construction.

The delegation includes representatives from timber companies, universities, innovation centers, and regional authorities. During their visit, they will hold meetings with public and private organizations, and conduct technical visits to research centers, factories, and timber-based housing projects.

One of the main focuses will be to explore public policies and incentives that have enabled countries like Finland and Sweden to become global leaders in timber construction.

TURKU: A MODEL FOR WOOD CONSTRUCTION

In Turku, the delegation will meet with city authorities. Turku  has been a pioneer in integrating timber into urban planning, playing a key role in the promotion and development of timber construction in Finland.

They will also visit Wood City Linnanfältti, a residential neighborhood developed by NCC, one of the largest Nordic construction companies. This is a national pilot project under Finland’s Wood Construction Promotion Program (2004-2010), aiming to develop a low-rise residential area (2 to 4 stories) for around 1,500 residents.

The project includes 82 homes across two identical twin buildings, differentiated only by their construction materials. This pilot allows the collection of precise comparative data on the climate impacts of both approaches.

In the afternoon, the delegation will head to Helsinki, where they will attend an official reception during the WoodBuild Finland 2025 congress.

They will then continue their journey in Stockholm, Sweden, with a visit to Skellefteå, the Sara Cultural Centre, and the Wood Hotel, among other activities.
